I am seldom home alone. Yesterday was one of those rare days when I enjoyed a few hours with the place all to myself. Knowing it wouldn’t last long and it will be a long time before it happens again I wanted to take full advantage of the freedom.

Freedom to do what, you might ask? Here is what I did with my autonomous moments:

I changed out the fasteners on the rack above the stove. You might not put something like this high on your WhooHoo!! list but this is a chore my husband has been intending to do since shortly after we moved in (Feb 2013!) My offers to take care of it have been routinely and firmly rebuffed. It’s his job and he’ll do it when he can. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to discover it’s done.

This was also a chance to play MY music. (You know, the music you like but your partner doesn’t so you don’t play it when he’s around so you don’t have to hear him grumble about it.)   I went through about half of our LPs (those flat, black, vinyl things us old folks used for our music back in the Jurassic era )and picked out a handful, keeping my fingers crossed that the turntable still worked. (Turntable, an archaic device used to play LP’s.) It did (it does!) Soon, I had an eclectic selection of late 60’s and early ’70’s tunes blasting through the place. It was wonderful to dance around the living room to oldies like Your Momma Don’t Dance and It Ain’t the Meat It’s the Motion. (Click to listen)

I love Strauss waltzes so while I had the turntable warmed up I had to twirl around to the Blue Danube too (from the ‘60’s, just an earlier century.)

I opened all the windows and doors and let the outside air flow through. It usually has to be in the high 80’s for me to get away with this. It’s one of the little compromises one makes when living with someone who has a different thermostat setting. He’s usually cold, I’m usually warm. He’s old so he wins.

It may not seem like much but it was delightful. Cool fresh air, loud and lively music, enthusiastic uninhibited dancing, and an annoying kitchen jury rig fixed. I declare this day a success.

What would you do with a day ay home free of the usual constraints?
